Volunteer Program

UNSW College runs a number of Orientations, graduations and events throughout the year, and none of these events can go as smoothly as they do without the help of our wonderful volunteers in their signature bright yellow shirts. Being a volunteer is a great way to phenomenally improve your English and conversation skills, improve your problem solving and practical skills, help new students find their feet in a new environment, and find lifelong friends in other volunteers.

There are multiple intakes of volunteers each year, and volunteers can choose to help out at events according to whenever their timetable allows, which makes it the perfect way to kick off your extracurricular involvement with UNSW College.

Student Representative Council

The Student Representation Council (SRC) is comprised of 7 Student Councillors, 1 Deputy Head and 1 Head, and they are entrusted with the responsibility and duty to embody the student voice, act on behalf of the students, strengthen the community, and create positive lasting change for current and future students.

The SRC meets regularly to discuss cultural events, fun experiences and queries that they have received from students, and work hard behind the scenes to make everyone’s student experience the best it can be. Most importantly, the SRC acts as the bridge between the students and staff at UNSW College, as the feedback and reports provided from the Council allows the staff to understand how best to tailor our services to the student community.

Students can learn more about the SRC in the Student Guide attached below:

Please note that only active volunteers can apply to be on the SRC, so we recommend starting with the Volunteer Program first if you are not one yet.

Student Internships

This program is a valuable paid opportunity for students to get some “real world” experience where over the course of three months, interns will work closely with the Student Experience Team at UNSW College to help deliver a range of engaging activities and exciting events, as well as helping to organise Orientations and graduations.

There are four types of internships that we provide:

  • Events
  • Communications
  • Customer Service
  • Social Media Marketing

Interns will be guided and mentored by the staff member in charge of each discipline and after the internship finishes, interns will receive a letter of recommendation to help with future job applications. Not only that, interns who perform exceptionally well may continue be offered other paid roles with UNSW College.

Internships are open periodically throughout the year, so make sure to check this website and your emails for when we announce the next intake!

Please note that only active volunteers can apply to become an intern, so we recommend starting with the Volunteer Program first if you are not one yet.

Peer Leaders – Study Club

Students who have excelled at their course can become a Peer Leader: an easy-to-approach mentor for fellow students who may be struggling academically. Being a Peer Leader is a great way to impart your personal effective study tactics, tips for balancing multiple subjects each term and provide general guidance to other students so that they can attain the grades they desire.

Peer Leaders will be present at the weekly Study Club sessions and deliver an encouraging and supportive space as they work with students to achieve their full academic potential; and is also a great opportunity for the Peer Leaders themselves to review past material to solidify their own knowledge surrounding their field of study.

Peer Mentors – Buddy Program

The Buddy Program is an inclusive initiative designed to equip new students with essential knowledge and support during their first four weeks of studies, commencing the week prior to the students’ Orientation. Students will be placed in groups and each led by a Peer Mentor, who is a current or graduate UNSW College with lots of experience and wisdom to impart.

The Peer Mentor will be the first friendly face representing UNSW College to welcome their group of new students, and be present in their group’s online chat and in-person to answer questions about life in Sydney. Moreover, the Peer Mentor will organise meetups for their group to meet in person and strengthen their bond even more. This leadership role is pivotal for helping new students to foster friendships and act as a bridge for their transition into the College community.

If you would like to become a Peer Mentor and support our new students, you can apply here.
