You never know what you might at a market on any given day. Perhaps it’s something you’ve tracked down all your life, or something you didn’t know you needed until you saw it. Perhaps you’re just there for the delicious food stalls. Either way, spending your weekend morning at a market is sure to guarantee to bring a spring in your step.
Markets at Glebe (previously known as Glebe Markets) is one of Sydney’s longest running markets which is famous for selling vintage items, varied street food cuisine and acoustic concerts organised by up-and-coming indie artists. It is a very new concept for many international students like us as we never had experienced anything like this before in our home country.
The market is open every Saturday at Glebe Public School and transforms the grounds into a vibrant fair. Small business owners participate in the markets to sell new products along with many vintage business owners selling vintage cameras, designer bags and the like. The street food options include my favourite Chinese soup dumplings, the crispy hard-shell tacos from Mexican food stalls and an array of gooey handmade cookies. You can find trendy accessories, clothing, and vintage biker jackets all in the same place. It is more like a festive fair where people from different ethnicities come together to celebrate small business owners and promote their business. My most favourite part of visiting the market is to go through the digital camera stalls as you can even find the rarest of cameras and films in there.
It is a whole experience to visit the Markets at Glebe as you can spend your whole day strolling around the stalls and enjoy the light acoustic music playing in the background while shopping and end your day with the exquisite street food cuisine. Visiting the cafes in front of the market area is also a good idea as they serve one of the best coffees and desserts that I have had in Sydney.
