Growing up in a digital-first world means many of us are amazing at communicating online – but picking up the phone? That can feel awkward, anxiety-inducing, or just something to avoid altogether.
Back to Basics kicks off our How to Adult Series by helping students build confidence with one of life’s most practical and still very important skills: communicating over the phone.
For many students – especially those with English as a second language – phone calls can feel overwhelming. Whether it’s calling a GP to book an appointment, answering a call about a job opportunity, ordering food, changing an appointment, or dealing with an urgent situation, phone communication often requires quick thinking, empathy, and real-time problem-solving – things chatbots can’t always replace.
This session focuses on:
📞 Build confidence in phone conversations
🧠 Navigate situations that require human judgement and empathy
🏥 Practise healthcare calls (doctors, dentists, appointments)
💼 Handle professional services (lawyers, finance, job-related calls)
️🛠️ Manage home services (plumbers, electricians, repairs)
🗣️Tackle sensitive or complex issues that need real back-and-forth discussion
💬 Headspace will be joining us 12pm – 1pm to run fun, interactive phone call scenarios, with topics chosen through a light-hearted ping pong ball & cup game – making practice feel supportive, engaging, and low-pressure.
This event isn’t about judging or dismissing how this generation communicates. It’s about recognising that all communication skills matter and giving you the tools to feel more confident when it really counts.
