Hey THRIVE readers, welcome back! October marks Mental Health Month, a time to pause, reflect, and celebrate the small but meaningful steps we take towards better mental health. This year’s theme, “Taking Steps on Your Wellbeing Journey,” reminds us that looking after our wellbeing is not about reaching a final destination, it’s about progress, self compassion, and growth along the way.
Just like any journey, our path to wellbeing isn’t always smooth. Some days we may move forward, and other days we might take a step back or sideways. That’s completely okay. Each step, no matter how small, can help us build resilience, strength, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and others. This article will introduce you to 5 Ways to Wellbeing and help you take the first step to your wellbeing journey today!
“Healing takes time, and asking for help is a courageous step.”
Mariska Hargitay
WayAhead’s Mental Health Month campaign encourages everyone to reflect on the steps they can take to improve their mental health, while recognising that setbacks are a natural part of progress. Asking for help, leaning on support networks, and taking time for self care are all important parts of the journey.
As a student, it’s easy to get caught up in deadlines, social events, or job stress, and forget to check in with yourself. This theme is a reminder to take those moments to pause and care for your mind, to ask for help when you need it and to be gentle with yourself along the way.
To help guide your wellbeing journey, Mental Health Month includes research based actions known as the 5 Ways to Wellbeing. Developed from evidence in positive psychology and community health, these five actions are simple yet powerful steps anyone can take to feel more connected, resilient, and fulfilled.
If you are new to 5 Ways To Wellbeing, watch this short video to learn more about it! It shows the simple things we can do to help us enjoy life and be kinder to ourselves when we feel disconnected.
Connect Spend time with people who make you feel seen and supported. Message a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while, join a student club on campus, or have a chat over coffee. Human connection strengthens belonging and helps reduce stress.
Be Active Movement boosts your mood and energy. It doesn’t have to be the gym, whether a walk around campus, stretching between study sessions, or joining a social sport, everything counts! Even five minutes of movement can refresh your focus and improve your mood.
Keep Learning Keep your mind curious and open! Try learning something new outside your classes, like photography, cooking, or a new language. You could even attend a workshop or watch a short documentary. Learning helps you grow confidence and brings a sense of achievement.
Be Aware Take a moment to slow down and notice what’s around you. Mindfulness helps you stay present and reduces anxiety. You can start with a few deep breaths, a moment of gratitude, or a mindful walk between classes.
Help others Do something kind for someone else. Check in on a friend, share your class notes, volunteer for an event, or simply listen when someone needs to talk. Small acts of kindness not only make others feel good, they boost your own wellbeing too.
Take your first step today
Starting your wellbeing journey doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Small actions can make a big difference, and your first step might be as simple as checking in with yourself or setting aside ten minutes for something that brings you joy.
You can also create your own wellbeing action plan using the 5 Ways to Wellbeing Action Plan. Fill it out online or print it to remind yourself of the steps you’re taking towards a healthier and more balanced life.
Taking that first step can feel difficult sometimes, and that’s completely normal. If you’re finding it hard to manage your stress, motivation, or emotions, you don’t have to face it alone.
