Safely explore Sydney's beautiful beaches

The Beach Ocean Safety Program is designed to help students build the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to enjoy Australia’s beaches safely. Through practical learning and hands-on experience, students will develop a better understanding of ocean conditions, identify potential risks and learn what to do in an emergency.

This program is brought to you by UNSW College in partnership with Coogee Surf Life Saving Club and proudly sponsored by Medibank.

How to register

The program runs over 3 days with sessions split between the UNSW Fitness and Aquatic Centre and Coogee Surf Life Saving Club. There is also a mandatory proficiency session to check your starting skills!

  • Saturday 24 October: 12pm – 8pm @ UNSW Fitness & Aquatic Centre
  • Saturday 31 October: 9am – 4pm @ Coogee SLSC
  • Sunday 1 November: 9am – 4pm @ Coogee SLSC

  • You’ll join theory and practical sessions at Coogee Beach led by trained surf lifesavers and gain skills in:

    • Reading signs at the beach  
    • Floating in rips, waves and tides   
    • Swimming in beach conditions 
    • Basic CPR and first aid  
    • What to do in an emergency  
    • Safe rock fishing  
    • Planning a safe trip to the beach   
    • Risks at the beach  
    • Handling real beach scenarios
  • The program is open to UNSW College students with basic swimming ability.

    You don’t need to be confident in beach conditions, but you will need to complete the proficiency swim.

Cost
$50 per person
This includes all sessions, merch and 1-month gym pool access, heavily subsidised thanks to Medibank and UNSW.

Frequently asked questions

  • The program runs over 3 days with sessions split between the UNSW Fitness and Aquatic Centre and Coogee Surf Life Saving Club. There is also a mandatory proficiency session to check your starting skills!

      • Float for 2 minutes
      • Swim 100m in under 4 minutes (any stroke)
      • Tread water for 30 seconds
      • Retrieve an object from the pool bottom
      • Hold breath underwater for 10 seconds

      Please note: You don’t need to be confident in open water – just meet the criteria above.

    • The BOS Program fee includes:

      • 3 full-day BOS sessions
      • A community membership with Coogee SLSC
      • Gym pool access for one month
      • A BOS merch pack
      • Free lunch at all sessions
      • A graduation event and certificate
