The Peer Mentoring Program gives experienced students the opportunity to make a real difference by welcoming new students, helping them build connections and supporting them as they take their first steps into university life.

As a Peer Mentor, you'll become a trusted guide for a small group of new students (which will be your "mentees"), helping them feel welcomed, connected and confident from the very beginning. Starting the week before Orientation and continuing for four weeks, you'll support new students as they settle into College, make friends and discover the opportunities available to them. Moreover, Peer Mentors help to:

  • Build friendships and connections within their mentor group before their mentees begin their studies. 
  • Provide guidance and advice about student life at UNSW College and settling in a new environment. 
  • Introduce campus activities, clubs, volunteering opportunities and ways for new students to get involved. 
  • Organise social activities that help your group feel comfortable, connected and part of the College community. 
  • Encourage new students to make the most of their university experience.

Eligibility criteria

To become a Peer Mentor, students must:

  1. Submit an Expression of Interest when applications open.
  2. Successfully complete the selection process and interview.
  3. Complete two Peer Mentor training sessions to become a qualified mentor.

After successfully mentoring three student groups, you'll become eligible to apply for the Senior Mentor Program.

Senior Mentors have the opportunity to take on greater responsibility, participate in additional development opportunities such as Mental Health First Aid training, and apply for paid leadership positions such as Peer Mentor Leader, where you'll support and guide future Peer Mentors.

Your commitment as a Peer Mentor will be celebrated through a range of recognition opportunities, including:

  • Official Peer Mentor certificates. 
  • An exclusive Mentor Thank You Event. 
  • Leadership Recognition Badges that showcase your mentoring achievements and contribution to the UNSW College community. 

By becoming a Peer Mentor, you'll leave a lasting impact on the students who follow in your footsteps, while building the leadership experience, confidence and skills to take your own journey further.
